Dear all,

I am also thinking that Chege's mystery bird is a Sombre Greenbul. Bill and eye are a near perfect fit to me. Adam has already explained the birds unusual plumage perfectly.  It was the first bird that came to mind when I looked at these pictures a few days ago and the longer I stare at these images the more I am confident with this ID.

I hope the next birders that visit this area can get more photos of this bird. A very interesting find!

Take care,

Stratton

Thanks for your feedback guys.

Unbeknown to me at the time of my last email, I now know that Sombre Greenbul was suggested independently by a very fine birder so I’m glad I’m not alone in this ‘outrageous’ suggestion.

@James - take a good look at Pete Steward’s image of the NNP bird online and compare the coloration of his bird which is virtually devoid of typical greenbul tones as well. As for the bill, the match is infinitely better for this species than any sparrow or weaver.

If my firm belief is correct, then the distinctive pale edging alone would probably warrant a good write up of this apparently undescribed form.

Either way, it is certainly worthy of further investigation and the truth will out in good time.

Very best to all,
Adam

To add my pennyworth, surely not a greenbul?! Not in a million years.

It looks like a weaver, or a sparrow, or a sparrow weaver to me. Species not determined!

Best wishes from the north,
