It’s mostly luck, I think, plus the sharp eyes of the birdwatching group, and on Wednesday mornings there are fewer visitors…

The tree pipits were at the picnic site where it overlooks Lily Lake. The Eurasian nightjar was perched in a tall, wide tree on the swamp side of the tree nursery at Amani Parking, off a trail that is not labeled - we took it by special permission. But we would never have spotted the bird, except that Dominic Chesire saw it fly in and land. And it’s probably here only for a few days on its way north.

However, the area near the cafe, the picnic grounds and KFEET should be good for migrants for the next few weeks.

Wishing you good birding! Fleur

Lovely sightings Fleur. I go to Karura on weekends almost every week and submit lists. I'm yet to see the Eurasian Nightjar and the Tree Pipit. What route did the group take?

Also, any tips on specific spots to visit would be great. I go through the family trail, turaco path, the lake, KFEET and the area near the cafe regularly. Anything I'm missing?

Best,
David

Greetings birders

Nature Kenya’s Wednesday Morning Birdwalk spent a delightful morning in the cool of Karura Forest today 27 March, thanks to Friends of Karura Forest. Highlights included:

White-backed Duck with large young
Crowned Eagles (a pair) calling loudly and chasing away another raptor
Eurasian Nightjar perched high in a tree
Eurasian Bee-eater flock over the swamp as usual
Willow Warbler - many
Common Whitethroat - one
Tree Pipit - two pairs

Wishing you good birding, Fleur
