Hi James,

Many thanks indeed for sharing this information regarding the change of name.

On the one hand, this is a bit of an inconvenience and, for many, something they can do without. Our books are now out of date but, then again, they probably were 15 years ago actually!

On the other hand, there are positives. The new name is more apt as it describes the plumage far better. It means that the name ‘Grey-throated Barbet’ will only be used for the western form - thus creating a ‘new species’ in Grey-headed. Other barbets are undergoing similar splits and name changes so this is not new. The more the merrier right? I, for one, think that this is good news as it helps with the conservation of ‘forms’.

Brian Finch and I continue to work on our guide to East African birds so these taxonomic changes will keep us on our toes.

Happy New Year everyone!

Adam

For the record,

Received earlier today a note from www.hbw.com

I’m Arnau Bonan from Lynx Edicions

There is one picture

That you identified it as Grey-throated Barbet, but in HBW-Birdlife Checklist 2 this species was split and in Kenya there is Grey-headed Barbet (Gymnobucco cinereiceps)

We have changed it.

I am not sure the Kenya Birds Checklist subscribes to this split.  Anyway here is the picture for the record
