Subject: Bar-tailed Trogon and Grey Parrots - Nairobi

Dear all,

Two very interesting Incidental records we just received in the Kenya Bird Map from Vincent Otieno: One is a Bar-tailed Trogon on Sunday in Upper Kabete, Nairobi, near Vet Labs Sports Club (pentad 0115_3640)! This is a bird of cold high altitude montane forest. Not one I'd expect in Kabete. Although Fleur Ng'weno says the NK Wednesday bird walk has recorded this trogon at the Arboretum in the cold season before. So it seems they are at least partial altitudinal migrants. The other is 5 Grey Parrots on Tuesday at Loresho Shopping Centre (pentad 0115_3645). These are almost certainly escaped pets. The same ones reported in Lavington and a few other places. The question is whether they are breeding or not.

Even when not actively atlassing, remember you can always use the BirdLasser app to record an incidental sighting of any unexpected bird you come across and submit it to the Kenya Bird Map. These records are useful too. Vincent was simply commuting when he saw these 2 birds but did a great job of getting them into the KBM

Cheers,
Sidney
