Subject: Thika birding

Hi all,

I had a great day birding around Del Monte yesterday.  I started down by the river where there is still some good birding despite the desperate state of the riparian vegetation.

On my way there I found this Brown-hooded Kingfisher.  Looking a bit like a superhero in that pose!

I believe this guy is a Brown-backed Scrub Robin?  I struggled to see it for so long until it finally decided to call from the top of a tree. I didn't manage any photos of its back/tail, though I did get a recording of it singing.

Like Brian, I found many Red-tailed Shrikes in many different habitats.  Though I don't know the race of these ones, but you can certainly note the paleness of the one on the right.

One of my favourites of the day was this young Little Bee-eater.  Since my birding is very limited these days, I was momentarily confused with its colour, particularly its chest.  It looked like an entirely different species!

The best was saved for last, when I confirmed this nesting Ayres Hawk Eagle.
