Hi Darcy,

Looks like a Brown-hooded Kingfisher to me. I saw this species regularly during the late 1970s at the Blue Posts, where Brian Finch recorded a pair resident throughout 1991 (see Scopus Vol 15 No 1).

Best,

David

On eBird I count over 14 records for the brown-hooded kingfisher in the Thika area, 9 from the Blue Post Hotel hotspot. I have seen it near the river in the DelMonte Estates. 5 locations around Thika have had sightings, including the sewage ponds.

Hope this helps...

David

Subject: Brown-hooded Kingfisher - Thika
Hi all,

An up and coming birder in Thika, Iyan Nsengimana, took this photo of a Brown-hooded Kingfisher (we're fairly certain of this ID, but we stand to be corrected) along the Chania River, just upstream of Blue Posts.  It got me to thinking why I've never seen this species in Thika as Zimmerman et al. note that it reaches Thika.  There's no records of anywhere close to Thika in Kenya Birds Map.  Are we overlooking it? or is it rare, or becoming rarer in the Thika region?

Cheers, Darcy
