Subject: [africanraptors] Position Announcement: 3 raptor migration monitors, Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, Djibouti [1 Attachment]
[Apologies for any cross posting!]
Greetings colleagues,
I am happy to announce that I will be coordinating a project to do full-season raptor migration monitoring at the Bab-el-Mandeb Straits in Djibouti this autumn, 2017. As you know, this site is expected to be one of the largest migratory bottlenecks in the world, based on the pioneering work of Geoff and Hillary Welch and several others, with most of the migration counts occurring in the late 1980s. Nonetheless, there has never been a full season count at this important site, an objective we plan to achieve this year. We will count from late August through late November, over an app. 90 day period.
Thirty-two species of diurnal raptors have been documented at the site, including 3 near-threatened, 2 vulnerable, and 3 endangered species. It is notable for huge numbers of endangered Steppe Eagle and Egyptian Vulture. Estimates of the number of raptors crossing at this bottleneck exceed 1 million.
The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait is a remote and climatically harsh site with significant logistical challenges. That, combined with the expected huge passage of a diverse group of raptors, makes having an exceptionally good team critical for the success of this project. We are looking to hire 1 lead counter / crew supervisor, and 2 supporting counters. I therefore kindly ask that you forward this position announcement to your friends and colleagues that may be interested in this challenging and ornithologically unique expeditionary effort. Please find attached the full position announcement. Review
will begin immediately, positions open until filled. We encourage people to apply
ASAP.
