Dear birders,
Nairobi ringing group have been conducting ringing activity on weekly basis. A lot of information like lifespan, distribution and dispersal, movement of altitudinal,intra-african,Malagasy and palearctic migrants can be obtained. Professional ringers and amateur ringers enjoys identifying, examining and put rings on birds, they all look forward having birds in hands. Re-trapped birds are always interesting too example A kenya Rufous Sparrow male which was first ringed on 25th sept 2008 was re-trapped on 8th Nov 2016 (8years later) is among the highlight for this season.
Change in weather pattern at this time of the year which should be rainy and green is clearly indicated by rare dry land species Eurasian Wryneck which was the first for the group since 1994,and a Rufous Bush Chat  which is a hard to see bird even in dry areas as the guide suggests was also ringed. General observation from the ringing group there is a slight change in species diversity so far ringed! Common whitethroat,Garden Warbler,Marsh Warbler and Black Cap are usually first migrants to be  ringed are yet to find their way into the mist nets.
We are hoping to have more surprises from the world of birds, keep you updated.
Happy birding.
John Gitiri.
