This is really interesting, Wamiti. I hope you are able to get
more details on the tag number, colour and where the tag is
located on the bird.
Please then also send the details to the Ringing Scheme email
address <ringing.eafrica@gmail.com> so that it can be
entered into the scheme recoveries database for future reference.
Thanks!
For all readers - if anyone finds a bird with a ring in East Africa, please report it to the Ringing Scheme of East Africa <ringing.eafrica@gmail.com> with the following details:
The scheme will then try and find out the ringing information for you and send you an official recovery form telling you about how far the bird had moved and how long since it was ringed.
Thank you!
Colin
Ringing Sub-committee, Ringing Scheme of East Africa
Dear Bird Watchers,
George Ndung'u has been observing and monitoring Grey Crowned Cranes in Lake Ol' Bolossat basin, Nyandarua County, Kenya at least for the last one year through a support from NABU.
He's therefore quite familiar with resident pairs - where they roost, feed, rest, nest etc. He recently came across a tagged male who'd not wait for him to get any closer to read the tag. He further saw a pait with both of them bearing tags.
This mail is therefore to ask if anyone out there has been tagging Cranes, within Kenya or outside. We are planning to find a telescope and try and read it. If we manage this, it might give us knowledge on their movements, habitat use etc. Sometimes, the number of Cranes in the basin swells up to several hundreds and would hence be nice to know where they come from.
Thanking you all in advance,
Wams.
