Subject: Re: [KENYABIRDSNET] Heath forest habitat

Darcy,

I agree with Tom about its presence on Elgon, Rwenzoris & Virungas. I think it must also occur on Kilimanjaro, but I cannot find any photos that I took at appropriate altitude there - I was probably too exhausted. I haven't noticed any on Aberdares. Mt Meru etc in N Tanzania?

There is heath forest on Elgon...with lots on the Rwenzoris and Virungas.

Cheers,

Hi all,

I could search around through endless documents to try and find these answers, but I'm hoping some on this list serv might be able to help me more efficiently.

Can anyone confirm the existence of heath forest on mountains other than Mt Kenya.  I'm assuming there is some on the Aberdares?  What about Mt Elgon?  Anywhere else in Kenya?  In Uganda or TZ?  Ruwenzoris, I think.

Does anyone know of species reliant on heath forest habitat?  This could be from any group of species, not limited to birds.

Finally, does anyone know of a good reference for determining the extent of heath forest  in Kenya, and in East Africa?

Thanks, Darcy
