Dear all,
This request concerns information on Martial Eagles. The goal is an assessment of current and historical distribution and to evaluate Martial Eagle population trends throughout Africa, inside and outside protected areas. There is much concern that this iconic species may be doing much worse than its current Red List status suggests. All information will contribute to a paper that reviews range-wide status, trends and
distribution.
Any information on Martial Eagle breeding attempts, historically or recent, would be especially useful. Any old or recent counts of Martials along transect lines would also be highly appreciated. We are also interested in collecting mortality records and causes (shooting, poisoning, electrocution/collision).
Some information was already provided on Birdlife’s Globally
Threatened Bird Forum but we expect there is still (much) more unpublished information out there. People with a significant contribution (multiple-year territory or count data to assess trends) are invited to co-author the article if such interest exists.
Please send any records not yet in the African Raptors Database directly to Tim Wroblewski at tim.wroblewski@habitatinfo.com. See below and the attached excel sheet for methods for submitting Martial Eagle records to the ARDB.
You could also
email any information (sight records, nest/point/transect surveys, mortality, etc.) directly to me at ralph.buij@gmail.com.
PLEASE SPREAD THIS MESSAGE AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE.
Many thanks for all information and help to spread this message.
Best wishes,
Ralph Buij
Methods for submitting Martial Eagle or other data to the ARDB
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
1. Please register with the ARDB
2. Submit data
b. Spread sheet - registration not required but suggested in order to edit your data in future and so we know who the data owner is- see attached spread sheet
1. The minimum requirement for a record is who, what, when and where. These essential fields are marked in red - without these we will not be able to process your record. We can only use high resolution data for modelling so please be as precise as you can with coordinates and we would welcome your assessment of this in the 'Precision' field.
2. Yellow fields are relevant to records collected during a survey
3. You can use either Google or Bing maps to identify the latitude and longitude (in decimal degrees)
4. We are especially interested in breeding and mortality records and associated information (cause etc. which appear orange when relevant). These are specified
under the 'Activity' field. Please also complete the feeding / predation fields if you have this information
5. If your records were collected during a survey please complete the survey metadata in the 'Surveys' sheet prior to inputting you records in the 'Records' sheet. Basically we need to know distance travelled for a road transect or duration for a fixed point survey. Please give us as much location information as possible - we have supplied a variety of location fields for this.
