Kenya: Forestry gets 1b worth of GIS
facilities/equipment
25 February 2013
The Kenyan forestry sector has received one billion shillings worth of facilities, plant and equipment for forest conservation. They include a modern Geographic Information
System (GIS) remote sensing laboratory, wall to wall forest cover maps and assorted vehicular equipment. This is an aid facility provided by the Government of Kenya and Japan under the Forest Preservation Programme (FPP). The aim of the FPP is to strengthen
the capacity of the KFS and the Kenya Forestry Research Institute in activities geared towards mitigating climate change in the forestry sector.
The remote sensing lab is based at the Kenya Forest Service Headquarters at Karura and will support forest resources assessments, reporting and monitoring and thereby improve forest planning, management and conservation efforts. They will also enhance data and information sharing with stakeholders.
The national level mapping has been done on a scale of 1:100,000 covering land use change from within three decades from 1990, 2000 and 2010. A detailed forest resource map specific for Mau Forest Ecosystem has also been developed at a scale of 1:50,000 with a complete forest crown cover classification. The map encompasses an additional 400,000 ha of buffer land around the complex.
The forest cover maps were launched together with the GIS web portal and equipment comprising graders, lorries, wheeled loaders,
crawler excavators, pick-up trucks, light vehicles and motorcycles.
