Striped Crakes are certainly moving around. Must be colder and more
miserable down south than here.
Yesterday afternoon Margaret and I were having a cup of tea on our
verandah when we noticed only some 6-8 metres away an odd-looking
bird on the lilies of our garden pond. It was a beautiful male
Striped Crake busy trying to eat a water beetle. Later it came out
of the pond walked all over our lawn, in and out of several flower
beds and other vegetation, and finally back to the pond just before 6
p.m.
No sign of it this morning.
Yesterday was the 24 June; exactly 52 years ago to the day our
daughter arrived !
