“Biofuel”: EU destroys 700,000 hectares of rainforest
| The European Parliament is debating the blending of palm oil in motor vehicle fuels |
Dear friends of the rainforests, Every year, 1.9 million tons of palm oil is blended into “biodiesel” in the EU. To produce this oil, 700,000 hectares of rainforest were clear-cut for plantations in Southeast Asia. Motorists have no alternative to the harmful palm oil due to statutory blending quotas. However, the European Parliament is in a position to stop this insanity, and its members are currently reviewing changes to the EU’s biofuels policy. The Parliament’s committees on industry and the environment will be convening on June 20 and July 10, and the policy will be put to a vote in a plenary session on September 10. Rainforest Rescue has already collected nearly 80,000 signatures in its campaign against biofuels. Please support our petition to the EU with your signature now.
