I recall the time when Ted Goss with Don Hunt captured several Grevy's zebra from Samburu and introduced then in Tsavo East which was managed by David Sheldrick. This happened around 1972. Ted was however, warden of Tsavo West National park at that time.

I wonder if any of you recall this translocation exercise, and whether these zebras may have extended their range into Tsavo West? I think my colleague of those days, Gerald Rilling remembers this exercise being a close friend of the Hunts and a frequent visitor to Samburu where a holding pen was constructed to keep the captured animals for a short while.

Tom and all

I was going through Riaan's bird images from one of his many Tsavo trips when I saw this photo and immediately suggested we send it to the Kenyan's for comment.

There is no doubt about the validity in terms of date, time and location.

Hi,

Grevy’s were ‘introduced’ into Tsavo East NP some decades ago…and the population has persisted…but remains small.  I seem to recall a figure of 10-20 animals.  I have, however, never heard of Grevy’s in Tsavo West NP or south of the Chyulus.  I suspect that this a good range extension record…if valid.

I am copying this to people who will know more about Grevy’s in this region.

Regards,

Tom

The co-ordinates put the Grevy's south of Chyulus, has anyone ever
seen a Grevy's in the south before, or even in the Tsavos. I suppose
they could wander in to the far NE of Tsavo East, but that is not an
area that many people have ever visited with the history of Somali
banditry.

Best to all
Brian
