Subject: Re: [KENYABIRDSNET] BAGLAFECT WEAVER
Hi Mike,
I have a fascinating book entitled A Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names, by James A Jobling, OUP 1991, which I found to be a rich source of information when I was researching my book A Gallery of East African Birds.
On the subject of baglafecht, it says: French name Le Baglafecht given to the Baglafecht Weaver Ploceus by Buffon (1770): probably from a native Abyssinian name.
Unfortunately, as with most items in the book, there is no source given for this piece of apparent conjecture.
It is perhaps not surprising that the book spreads itself a little thin, as its stated aim is to "provide a complete and accurate etymology for all currently valid generic and specific bird names described between January 1759 and June 1990 together with an eclectic selection of historical synonyms."
Ambitious or what!!
All best, John Dawson

I Have tried to ascertain the derivation of the title Baglafecht , without an apostrophe
The species has from time to time been called
1 Emin’s Weaver after Emin Pasha [ a german !]
2 Reichenow’s Weaver after Dr Anton Reichenow
3 Stuhlman’s Weaver after Dr Franz Stuhlman
The scientific name of each has Baglafecht in the title
I did post it on bird forum and the only comment was that it might have come from some French name Le Baglafecht by Buffon
Any one any ideas ?
