Subject: Visit North of Athi River 15 December 2012

Brian Finch and I revisited the area just north of Athi River last Saturday 15th December.  We saw Black-faced Sandgrouse (a pair) and some 20 lovebirds (Fischer hybrids) feeding on the grass heads, but we were really interested in seeing if we could find more Palaearctic migrants.  We had 1 Yellow wagtail, 10 Northern Wheatears, 4 Pied Wheatears, 6 Isabelline Wheatears, 6 Common Rock Thrushes, 3 Whitethroats and 1 Red-tailed Shrike.  But the best bird was a Palaearctic Hoopoe.  We were able to see the bird as clearly paler and with the white in the primaries compared to the African Hoopoe which was also present.
