Hi All,

WOW! What a very exciting discovery!

I've CC'd Jackson Looseyia and Paul Oliver, the finders, to check they are happy to get the good news out and allow use of their photos. Maybe they could be persuaded to produce a short write-up too?

Thanks for the great feedback one and all.

Hi Ernest

It would make perfect sense as, because when we caught them in Pafuri we caught them fairly quickly after one another.

Adam just confirm if you have any issues with this being included in the African Bat Conservation News, it is a good documentation of G. variegata roosting? As Ernest says, may be the first documentation.

Regards

Walt

Hi does look like Glauconycteris variegata. Could we include this observation in African Bat Conservation News.

If not mistaken is the first photo of this species roosting. Also I was under the impression that they roosted singlely and not in a cluster. Possibly the group we caught in pufuri may have left such a roost?

Keep well,
Ernest

Hi Adam

Looks like Glauconycteris variegata – commonly known as Variegated Butterfly bats or Butterfly Bat. They are beautiful vesper bats – family Vespertilionidae.

When caught and the wing is opened, you would see black lines on the wing membrane which are very distinctive, besides the yellow colour.

I have also cc’d in some Chiroptera specialists I know, which can confirm if G. variegata.

Nice find.

Hi All,

Jackson Looseyia has just sent me this interesting image of bats roosting in the eastern Mara, Naboisho Conservancy. Can anyone offer an ID ?

Many thanks
