Subject: Where did the Crab-plovers go?

Very bizarre last week - two days in a row we were doing low tide surveys of Mida Creek and did not see a single Crab-plover the whole low tide cycle when the week before there were c.400+. Have no idea at all what happened to them. Last night we ringed at Mida for the first time since May due to v windy conditions (still hugely windy) and the Crab-plovers were back. Very odd.

As it was so windy, we only ringed 8 birds and had one retrap - but diversity was a good as you can get it - 8/8 ringed were different species and for the first time ever I've caught more Grey Plover than any other species as the retrap was an old friend ringed on 11th March 1999 making it 12 1/2 years old! Species caught were:

Terek Sandpiper (now being colour flagged with WHITE lettered flags on the right tibia - please look out and report any you see)
Greater Sandplover (also being colour flagged but with ORANGE lettered flags on the right tibia - ditto)
Sanderling
Curlew Sand
Greenshank
Barwit
Ringed Plover
Grey Plover
