Subject: RE: FW: Lake Natron ... have we given up?

Dear colleagues,

I trust this finds you well.

I would like to shed some light on what is happening at Lake as there seems to be a lot of anxiety caused by the statement that “bulldozers are on the ground at Lake Natron.” I also wish to let people know how they can get accurate information on this subject in future.

Bulldozers at Lake Natron

It is true that bulldozers were sighted at Lake Natron.  The bulldozers were put there by the Government of Tanzania to improve the battered road leading to Loliodo. As most of people know, there is a huge influx of cars and buses full of sick people going to see Mr. Ambilikile Masapila an acclaimed traditional practitioner, also known as “Babu.” He dispenses a ‘miracle’ herbal concoction which is said to cures all diseases.

The bulldozers have nothing to do with the construction of the soda ash plant or the Serengeti Highway. If this status changes, we will inform people accordingly.  This information is based on discussions this week with our contacts based at Ngare Sero Village, Lake Natron.

The information about the bulldozers was based on a report by one of our friends who visited Lake Natron 3 weeks ago who, unfortunately, did not have accurate information.

Long queue as cars flock to Loliondo

What are we doing after the soda ash fast track announcement?

In April the President of Tanzania ordered the fast tracking of the construction of the Lake Natron soda factory.

1.      We have revitalized the Lake Natron campaign, developed a new Campaign Strategy and have done some articles to sensitise the public e.g  http://www.birdlife.org/community/2011/04/fresh-concerns-as-president-orders-lake-natron-soda-ash-mining-fast-tracked/

This story was replicated on many websites globally.

2.     Wetlands International have also done a story and WWN are writing a letter to the President.

3.     A statement from the local community denouncing the soda ash plant is expected in the next two weeks.

4.     The process of carrying out the Cost Benefit Analysis has started and is expected to end in August.

5.     In the last few weeks we have discovered that the Hindustan National Glass and Industries (HNG)has an interest in taking forward the soda ash plans abandoned by Tata Chemicals Industries. BirdLife and RSPB have written to HNG to seek more information.

These are just some highlights.

How to get up to date information on Lake Natron

There are three ways of getting the latest and accurate information on Lake Natron:

By joining the list, we will send you a the Monthly Update Bulletin on Lake Natron.  This very informative bulletin will keep you in the know. Just send me an email if you would like to be included on the list. If you would like to catch up, I can send you the most recent Updates.

Subject: Lake Natron ... have we given up?

HI Mercy,

Can you pass this on to the committee please?

Dear All.

I was in our website today and came across articles embedded in there  http://www.naturekenya.org/Lake%20Natron  ... the latest being 2007. I hear that the bulldozers are in Lake Natron as I write, and that all conservation of flamingo issues have been rejected by the Tanzanian Government.
Is this something we just have to give up on?

Fiona
