Subject: Some recent records from Mara and Rift Valley lakes

Hi All,

 

Just a quick mail with some recent records from the past few weeks safari before I head back to UK for a few weeks, from today.

 

Lake Nakuru – 28/10 to 1/11

Shoveler – a flock of 30+

Pallid Harrier – several smart males around

Steppe Buzzard – steady passage of birds with up to 75 seen in a day

Steppe Eagle – also steady passage with 10+ seen per day

Lesser Moorhen – one seen at the Rhino Point causeway

Hemprich’s Hornbill – a pair from Sarova Lion Hill

Red-throated Wryneck – a pair showing well close to Lanet Gate junction

Pied Wheatear – always nice to see, and there were plenty of them

 

Lake Baringo – 2/11 to 6/11

Purple Heron – a few adults with 10+ immatures seen well

Pygmy Falcon – a friendly pair close to the main road

Fox Kestrel – one seen distantly over the cliffs – such a long tail!

Verreaux’s Eagle – a pair with active nest on the cliffs

Allen’s Gallinule  - an adult with well grown immature at south end

Black-headed Lapwing -  I missed this bird on my last visit, so good to get onto my Kenya list

Eurasian Rock Thrush – a stunner in non-breeding plumage

Magpie Starling – surprisingly numerous with several flocks of 30+ seen

 

Lake Bogoria – 4/11

Black-necked Grebe – 12+ seen from shoreline

Eurasian Curlew – two seen at north end marsh

Avocet – several good sized flocks, up to 40+

Black-cheeked Waxbill – quick views of a pair in scrub

 

Lake Nakuru – 6/11 to 7/11

Osprey – great views of a single overhead on 7th

Black-tailed Godwit – a single was my first in EA

Olive Pigeon – a single

Whinchat – a single

Grey-crested Helmet Shrike – a single seen well beneath Baboon Cliffs on 6th

White Helmet Shrike – several small flocks seen

Mountian Wagtail – three birds seen at the Falls at south end of the park

 

Kichwa Tembo – 9/11 to 11/11

Bat Hawk – seen at dusk over the camp

Ovambo Sparrowhawk – breathtaking view of a stunning female that cruised past the dining room on 11th

Ross’s Turaco – several seen and heard

Schalow’s Turaco - several seen and heard

B&W-casqued Hornbill - several seen and heard

Narina Trogon – one male seen well in camp

Grey Apalis – responded nicely to playback to give me a rewarding full frame image

Black-headed Gonolek – a pair seen well and heard often in the Bateleur end of the camp

Mountain Wagtail – a single was my first in the Mara

 

Oloololo (Serian) escarpment – 11/11

Booted Eagle – a single with Steppe Buzzards

Long-billed Pipit – a nice pair seen well

Green-capped Eremomela – just a single

Double-toothed Barbet – not seen in Kichwa this time but several heard in the valley

 

Musiara Marsh (Masai Mara) – 11/11

Greater Painted-Snipe – a very approachable flock of 11 birds on the marsh
