Thanks to Itai for reminding me that several years ago the two of us actually did see a gabonensis, at Ikuywa river in Kakamega Forest in Kenya; like a too dark Red-chested, but helpfully calling like a Black Cuckoo.

Best wishes,
Bernd

Brian Finch is on safari until the end of this month, but I can indicate that in Kenya we are getting increasing records of subspecies gabonensis.  Only 2 weeks we sighted one very near Mtito Andei, which is east of longitude 38degrees.  No confusion on the sighting as it was calling and Brian photographed it.

Hi Bernd and Alistair,

I agree with this being a Black Cuckoo of the subspecies gabonensis on the points that Bernd mentions below, and for comparative purposes, I've attached a very low-res photo of each that I took in Uganda last month.

all the best

Hi Neil,

I've never seen gabonensis, but according to the pictures in Stevenson & Fanshawe, red on the throat (instead of grey in Red-chested), lack of yellow eye-ring, all black bill and dark upperparts would all seem to favour a gabonensis Black? Curious what others think!

One of or guys has recently photographed this cuckoo in the Mara.
My sense is that it is a near adult Red-chested (reason for lacking the
yellow in the bill/eye?). There is not much clarity on the gabonensis
race of Black Cuckoo ito what an intergrade might look like. I don't see
the rufous really covering the throat.

Do you know much about the gabonensis race?
Thanks
Alastair

Subject: 7 pictures for you

Hello all,

Hope this mail finds you well.

I need some help in identifying the bird in the pictures attached. There
has been a bit of a debate as to whether it is a juv. Red chested Cuckoo
or a Black Cuckoo! There is however mention from Sinclair as to a sub
species of the Black Cuckoo in W Africa that looks similar and has been
recorded venturing into E Africa.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Thanks

Niall
