Hello Hanno,
I know it's essentially become very rare here in northern Tanzania of late. We arrived in 2005 and I still have not seen one.
They used to be regular, occasionally in good numbers, e.g. on Momella lakes in Arusha National Park.
Neil Baker has much more info.

Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula is on the lists of 24 countries in mainland Africa as well as several islands based on the information held on the African Bird Club country checklist database.

The most southerly record is from Malaŵi where it is recorded as a vagrant. The reference for this is Birds of Malawi by F. Dowsett-Lemaire and R.J.Dowsett Tauraco Press and Aves (2006) page 125. They state “can be no more than an exceptional vagrant this far south in Africa and not normally recorded south of N Tanzania: a female shot by D.P.Turner on 1 Mar 1949 at Karonga is the only record and unfortunately the specimen was not preserved. Still unknown from Zambia and Southern Africa (except for probable escapes).
