Dear Friends,
The Tana River film I made last year is going to be aired in
Kenya on K24 next week. First it will be aired in three parts at
15:30 on wednesday, thursday and friday, and then repeated all in one
go on saturday.
For those of you in Kenya with access to K24... please watch
it! Tell all your friends. And once you've seen it, please
send in comments by email, letter or in person to your local MP
telling him or her how you feel about the Tana river situation.
The more people that send in letters, the more powerful the statement
will be.
The film is a bit rough around the edges - I'm still learning how
to make films - but my heart went into it. I would most welcome
feedback from you all.
Finally, thanks to so many of you who really helped me and made
me feel so welcome in Kenya. Hope to see you again, Warmest
regards,
Adrian

Dear John, Thank you for the prompt
response. Hopefully the airing of the documentary
itself will provoke a strong response, that may lead to more
discussion. I think there is also a great opportunity
to follow up with new investigation. Will life improve
for the Pokomo of Hewani and elsewhere? Will the Orma
respond with armed conflict? And what will be the
impact of the proposed Qatar land rental proposal? If
you are interested in following any of these issues up and
are able to provide or help obtain a filming permit, I would
be prepared to search for funding to cover these stories on
camera. Kindest regards, Adrian

Dear Adrian,
I acknowledge the delay in airing the programme. We
had hoped to strip the programme into three parts and
create some buzz and conversation around the video and get
interviews to air after each part. For some reason, the
subjects who should be drivers around this conversation
are reluctant to comment on this. We shall proceed and air
the programme as is.
Kindest regards,
John

Dear Rose and John, It has been many
months since I sent you the tape of my Tana River
documentary, and I was wondering what has
happenned. Has the documentary been
aired? If not, why? I went through
considerable effort making the film and sending
you the tape, and I would really appreciate some
feedback, or at least a statement on what, if
anything, you plan to do with the
documentary. kind
regards, Adrian (Producer)

Dear Adrian,
Thank you for giving us the rights to air
the Tana Delta film. I would like to assure you
that we shall respect respect your wish will not
disclose your name. We fully expect the film to
generate heated debate and some controversy -
which is good. Thank you for your suggestion
that we include a 'live' discussion with
stakeholders after the screening. We shall do
that.
The best way to send the tape is by DHL or
FEDEX (unless you have somebody coming to
Nairobi who can bring it). Our address is;

Dear Rose,
I have just
finished dubbing the film onto miniDV
tape. The documentary is 44 minutes 20
seconds long. Unfortunately, I do not have
the time or resources to re-cut the film to 55
mins as I start a new job on Monday that will
not allow me time to do additional work.
However, I would suggest that you show
the film as a 55min special. You could bring the
44 min film to 55 mins by adding an 11 minute
section of discussion after the film. For
example, you could have an 11 minute discussion
of the issues with a panel of stakeholders who
have seen the film. This could include
representatives of Mumias sugar, MAT
International, NEMA, TARDA or other
politicians. You could be sure of some
strong reactions, and some interesting
television!
You could also include the
Headman of Hewani, or other Pokomo leaders as
I'm sure their opinion on the benefit of
sugarcane may have changed after seeing the
film.
I am happy to provide this film
free of charge, and give you broadcast rights
for the East African Region under some
conditions which I will stipulate in a contract
I will send to you. I would like to remain
anonymous as I do not want to attract political
attention. Please respect that, and do not
disclose my name to any third party.
Finally, to what address would you like
me to send the tape? What's the best way
of sending it?
kind regards, Adrian

Dear
Adrian,
We’re
very excited about the prospect of running the
Tana River film. Thank you for giving us
permission to do so. We’re also producing
several news features on this controversial
subject that will run the same week we air the
film. We’ll need it in Mini DV format. On
duration, we’re limited to lengths of 25 minutes
(for a 30-min film to allow time for station
promos, advertisements, etc) or 55 minutes (for
a one-hour feature).
Looking
forward to receiving the film!
Regards.
Rose

Dear Rose, My name
is Adrian Seymour, the producer of the Tana
River Film. I heard from Jean Hartley that
you would be interested in broadcasting my film,
which is great news. Within a month or
less I am going on a 6-week trip abroad and I
was hoping to be able to deliver you the film
before I leave.. In what format would you
like me to send the film, and do you have any
editorial requirements (e.g. duration)? Many
thanks, Adrian
