Hi all
The new wader Atlas arrived a few days ago.
Delany, S., Scott, D., Dodman, T, & Stroud, D. (eds.) 2009. An Atlas of Wader Populations in Africa and Western Eurasia. Wetlands International, Wageningen, The Netherlands.
Due to financial problems this book has been delayed but the wait as been well worth it.
Each species is treated at the level of the biogeographical population. Distribution limits and population levels are given as are key sites. The latter are essentially the 1% sites that
meet Ramsar criterion 6 but other sites of "high counts" are also given. This represents "the state of play" with each population and it is here that WE must publish new information
to enable Wetlands International to improve upon population estimates and sites of international importance. Tanzania has made a start on this but much needs to be done as we
strive to identify the most important sites for conservation and alert Government to their importance.
Short notes to SCOPUS could be significant here.
Counting water birds can and does make a difference.
I will scan and circulate some maps as we begin to address the species of interest in coming months but I would urge everyone to purchase this book.
buy, absorb and enjoy
