Subject: 15-16 August records, Ngong - Kisames, 2008

Dear fellow birders:

During a recent (15-16 August 2008) hiking/camping and birding expedition on the backside of the Ngong Hills, with a client, co-worker, friend and my son, we recorded 76 bird species.

The evidence of the hot and dry conditions were real as the seasonal dam near the Olosho Oibok village, had receded only leaving a small pan of water. On the shores of the pan there was a Common Sandpiper (was it either an early arrival or non-return migrant?).  Terrapins were basking out on the exposed rocks. Much of the livestock had been moved out of the area for water and greener pastures elsewhere.

The trip’s highlight was at the end of the expedition, with a perfect sighting of the Temminck’s Courser near Rib’s Resort, Kisames Trading Center, off the Magadi Road.

Happy birding always,

James Kuria Ndung’u
