Subject: Bird-ringing at Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary (13th July 2008)

Dear folks:

Greeting and I hope all is very well!

With the unseasoned rains, pondering the city and its environs, birding at the Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary (NRFS) on Sunday 13 July 2008, was awesome!

Three clients, two guards and I braved the early morning showers and were rewarded with 41 species of birds, 3 mammal species (Sykes’s Monkeys, Bushbuck and the Suni).

As it cleared and warmed up, several species of the elegant and graceful forest butterflies were encountered. The butterflies positively identified included:  Mocker Swallowtail Papilio dardanus, Emperor Swallowtail P. ophidicephalus, Citrus Swallowtail P. demodocus, and the Green-patch Swallowtail P. phorcas.

The team had excellent views/sights of the following raptors (birds of prey) namely the African Fish Eagle, African White-backed Vulture, African Crowned Eagle, the two latter species with breeding records, as they were observed feeding young in their respective nests.

Other birds worth a mention included: Scaly Francolin, Black Cuckoo-shrike, White-starred Robin, and the Brown Alethe.

It was a great way of winding the weekend.

Happy birding always,
