Subject: Breeding record for Chin-spot Batis, Magadi

Dear all:

The past weekend of 24-25 May 2008 the succulenta group had organized a field trip to Emerit area, Magadi, which, also coincided with the AGM.

At the base camp Olorgesailie Pre-Historic Site, there was an obliging and a camera friendly pair of the Chin-spot Batis Batis molitor. The adult pair was engaged on a busy feeding regime of their two fledglings.

The camouflaged cup-shaped nest tacked on a fork branch of an Acacia sp., approximately 4-feet off the ground, consisted of lichen, dried leaves, lined with soft feathers and bonded by the spider-web.

At the end of the trip, the total number of the birds’ species was 51 (the fuller list posted on the Kenya birdfinder); four mammals were recorded (Olive Baboon, Dwarf Mongoose, Impala and Grant’s Gazelle, whilst, the list of the succulenta added up to 14 species. The most striking succulenta in bloom was a member of the Euphorbia family (Euphorbia scarlatina).

What a great weekend outing!

Regards,

James Kuria Ndung'u
