Subject: Birds, trees and flowers at the Nairobi Arboretum

Dear birders:
Today’s (31 March 2008) morning tree walk with FONA members was quite interesting!
The following birds were identified by their calls - Hartlaub’s Turaco, Cabanis’s Greenbul, Greater Honeyguide, and the Tropical Boubou. A noisy flock of Eurasian Bee-eaters, numbering 30 individuals flew past, headed northwards, perhaps on their return journey to their breeding grounds.
From a botanical perspective, both exotic and indigenous trees were in colourful blooms, as well as fruiting season too! The highlight if the native trees in flowers included – the Nandi Coffee Coffea eugeniodes, Fried Egg Oncoba routledgei, and the widespread Croton Croton megalocarpus.
In addition, the other native species in fruit included the Arrow Poison tree Acokanthera schimperi, the Cycad Encephalartos hildebrandtii, Podo tree Podocarpus falcatus, and the Sycamore Fig Ficus sycomorus.
Exotic species in flowers were the Australian Moreton Bay Chestnut Castanospermum australe, and the African False Wattle tree Peltophorum africanum from southern African region.
It is worthwhile to visit the arboretum, whilst, the trees are in their season!
Happy birding,
James Kuria Ndung’u.
