Breeding records Greetings

Although rains have been sporadic and unpredictable for the past few months, many young birds have been sighted on recent outings. These include:

Lake Nakuru National Park, January 20, during the African Waterbird Census:
Great White Pelican, several brown immatures
Greater Flamingo, two young with grey bills flying with two adults
Lesser Flamingo, large numbers of immatures; one young being fed by parent
Kittlitz’s Plover, two tiny chicks
Grey-headed Gull, several immatures begging from adults; adults in breeding plumage, underparts flushed pink.

Road through Solio Ranch, Laikipia near Naro Moru, January 26:
Greater Kestrel, young with brown eyes, begging

Buffalo Springs National Reserve, January 28
Crowned Plovers with two tiny chicks
Wire-tailed Swallow, adult sitting in nest
Donaldson-Smith’s Sparrow-Weaver, two adults defending nest from Red-billed Hornbill
Rosy-patched Shrike, Bristle-crowned Starling, Hunter’s Sunbird, Chestnut Sparrow, Black-capped Social Weaver and Black-cheeked Waxbills were collecting or carrying nesting material or nest-building.
