Subject: Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary - Birding, destruction etc

Dear all:

Happy New Year, though, belated!

A two-hour afternoon birding session in the sanctuary on 6 January 2008 yielded 38 bird species.

Some of the highlight species were African Crowned Eagle, Lemon Dove, Narina Trogon and the White-starred Forest Robin. Some of the Eurasian migrants recorded included the Common Sandpiper and Spotted Flycatcher.

The only confirmed breeding record was from the Collared Sunbird, observed feeding one young.

However, on a sad ending, towards the end of my walk, I did a stump count of approximately 60 freshly chain-sawed and axed “Muhugu” trees (Brachylaena hulliensis). The diameter of the same varied in sizes and it seems the selective logging was very recent and within a certain targeted radius of the forest.

In addition, there were three expansive mounds of trash especially the wine bottles, plastic bags and plate’s e.t.c. perhaps from the restaurants within the vicinity.

Does the NRFS management know about this continuing wanton destruction going on?

Happy birding always,

Kuria.
