Subject: Bird of Prey in the Mara

Hi everyone:

Firstly I must apologize for the crap picture. It was hazy and the bird was flying right on the edge of the fire.

I have had numerous responses. My first gut feeling was to suggest a first record of Rough-legged Buzzard for the region. I hope everyone noted that the bird has feathered tarsi so it is either an eagle or a rough-legged buzzard. There are NO records of RLBs in Africa especially Dark-morphed ones and so the chances are slim. Bill Clark (world authority on raptor ID) suggested a dark morphed Booted Eagle even and says that real dark ones done have the characteristic "landing lights". I am more inclined to believe him as that was my second choice. Dick Forseman suggests a dark-morphed Wahlberg's while Rob Simmons thinks it may be a Lesser-spotted Eagle. It certainly had unique markings and a very pale head.

I am glad everyone is confused which goes on to show just how difficult raptors can be :)

Happy Diwali and Idd to all...

cheers

Munir

Hi Guys:

I'd be interested to get your views on this bird seen in the Mara last week foraging on at the edge of a fire...feeding on grasshoppers.

I have had many responses and have narrowed it down, but would like to get your thoughts.

cheers
